Gli oli di origine biologica sono una parte importante dello sviluppo di nuove strategie, politiche e sussidi che contribuiscono a ridurre la dipendenza dal petrolio e da altre fonti non rinnovabili. Gli oli vegetali presentano strutture chimiche uniche e, di conseguenza, le loro proprietà differiscono da quelle degli oli minerali. Modificando chimicamente gli oli vegetali (attraverso reazioni quali epossidazione, esterificazione e acetilazione), è possibile migliorarne le caratteristiche quali la sensibilità all’idrolisi e agli attacchi ossidativi, le proprietà a bassa temperatura e i coefficienti dell’indice di viscosità. Gli oli vegetali modificati chimicamente presentano una migliore capacità lubrificante, indici di viscosità e proprietà anticorrosive superiori, grazie alla maggiore affinità degli oli vegetali con le superfici metalliche. Gli oli vegetali possono essere utilizzati in una gamma estremamente ampia di applicazioni automobilistiche, industriali e farmaceutiche. Tuttavia, identificare un biolubrificante che sia sia economico che rispettoso dell’ambiente rappresenterebbe una sfida.
