A síndrome reprodutiva e respiratória suína (PRRS) é uma doença que surgiu simultaneamente na Europa (início da década de 1990) e na América do Norte (final da década de 1980) e continua a ser uma das principais doenças que afetam a indústria suinícola em todo o mundo. A PRRS é caracterizada por problemas respiratórios, como tosse e dispneia, em suínos em crescimento e terminação e falha reprodutiva em porcas, com aborto tardio, natimorto e aumento da mortalidade pré-desmame. Para combater esta doença, é necessária a implementação de protocolos de controlo (biossegurança e higiene, imunização), juntamente com medidas de erradicação da PRRS, incluindo o despovoamento total e repovoamento da exploração ou o encerramento da exploração por pelo menos seis meses, entre outras. Os autores conduzem o leitor por vários aspetos da PRRS, a fim de fornecer uma abordagem global sobre o controlo/erradicação e prevenção deste vírus em explorações suinícolas.
