A Síndrome de Munchausen by Proxy (SMBP) carateriza-se pela criação, exagero ou indução de doenças físicas ou mentais pelo cuidador num indivíduo, na ausência de recompensas externas. Este diagnóstico é aplicável ao agressor, podendo a vítima receber um diagnóstico de abuso. A prevalência real deste distúrbio é desconhecida, existindo pouca informação acerca dos indivíduos com este diagnóstico, que na maioria dos casos não estão dispostos a colaborar com investigadores que pretendam explorar as causas subjacentes a este comportamento. Esta obra teve como objetivo analisar o conhecimento científico atual respeitante à psicopatologia, personalidade e aspetos psicossociais dos agressores em casos de SMBP. Serão também abordadas possíveis motivações, algumas das teorias explicativas propostas e ainda considerações sobre o diagnóstico. O tratamento e prognóstico serão explorados de forma sucinta.Apesar das dificuldades associadas ao diagnóstico e caraterização psicológica deste grupo de doentes, é importante expandir o conhecimento acerca das suas caraterísticas de personalidade e dinâmicas relacionais, para melhorar as intervenções terapêuticas e minimizar o sofrimento das vítimas.
