A few years ago, after watching the exciting Robin Williams’ movie, DEAD POETS SOCIETY, we decided to form our own version; THE LIVE POETS’ SOCIETY. This group consists of mostly TFMC church members, their friends, a few relatives, and several old and dear deceased individuals who we decided to add to this book. We have one major common bond; we are all lovers, and writers, of poetry. In May of 2004, we had our first meeting. At that time, our goal was to join together, possibly every other month, and share our own writings with one another. We also brought poems from other poets that we thought the group might like to hear. Each person had the opportunity to read whatever they wanted to contribute. We had eight people who were very enthusiastic about this new ’Society’. From this humble beginning, more of our members showed a real love of not only reading poetry, but most of them were poets in their own right.and much of the work was wonderful to read. We had loads of fun from this special ministry, along with lots of hard work and dedication. Our group always looked forward to the meetings. We didn’t want these great works of art not to be recognized. That was why we got the idea of putting this book of marvelous poetry together for us to share with the congregation and all our friends and relatives. What started out as a special sharing and caring group, which then later evolved into a writing and reading time, came full circle to present to you and yours, this book of poetry from our hearts. Enjoy. Robert Paul Szekely Chairman and Editor of the LPSociety

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

  • The Truth about A

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. Set in contemporary Sydney, among a fictional underworld family, The Truth abou...
