Ships That Pass in the Night is a novel written by Beatrice Harraden. The story revolves around two strangers, Ste. Marie and Helena, who meet on a train to Paris. They begin a conversation and quickly discover that they share a deep connection. However, their conversation is cut short when they arrive at their destination and part ways. Over the course of the novel, the two characters continue to cross paths, each time deepening their connection but never fully acting on their feelings. The story explores themes of love, fate, and missed opportunities. Harraden’s writing style is characterized by its sensitivity and emotional depth. She portrays the characters’ inner turmoil and longing with great empathy, making the reader feel invested in their story. Overall, Ships That Pass in the Night is a poignant and timeless tale of missed connections and unfulfilled love.1894. Arguably one of the best-known Suffragette writers, Beatrice Harraden was a popular novelist who was heavily involved in the Suffragette tax resistance campaign. Her best-selling sentimental romance, Ships that Pass in the Night tells of a doomed love-affair between two patients in a tuberculosis sanitarium. This story caught the public’s imagination, and the title became a byword for a fleeting or doomed love affair. The title was inspired by lines in Longfellow’s Tales of a Wayside Inn, Third Evening, Theologian’s Second Tale (Elizabeth), Fourth Part. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
