''Shell Gatherer'' is a novel written by Katharine Burrill and published in 1905. The story follows the life of a young woman named Margaret, who lives in a small village on the coast of Maine. Margaret is a shell gatherer, spending her days collecting shells and other treasures from the beach. Despite her simple life, Margaret is intelligent and curious about the world around her. When a wealthy artist named Richard comes to the village to paint the scenery, Margaret is drawn to him and his sophisticated lifestyle. The two develop a close friendship, but Margaret soon realizes that their worlds are too different for a romantic relationship to work. As Margaret grapples with her feelings for Richard, she also faces challenges within her own community. A group of businessmen want to build a factory on the beach, threatening the natural beauty that Margaret loves. She must decide whether to stand up for what she believes in or let the factory be built. Throughout the novel, Burrill explores themes of class, love, and the importance of nature. ''Shell Gatherer'' offers a glimpse into the life of a young woman in early 20th century America and the choices she must make as she navigates her place in the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
