Shawnee Traditions is a companion volume to The Shawnee Spirit by providing the myths, legends, tales, speeches, and other narratives that form the basis for the historical analyses of The Shawnee Spirit. Here are about 100 selections mostly from the lips of the Shawnee heralds themselves as they expressed their dismay at the effects of the European intrusion into their homelands. The collection of texts includes many unpublished material from collectors such as Albert Gatschet, Truman Michelson, Charles Voegelin, and fieldwork manuscripts by the author, Noel Schutz. The materials display the deep spirituality of the Shawnee in all their richness and variety. Notable are tales of the Creation, transoceanic migration legends, and tales of culture heroes like Wrong-sides Boy and deities like the Grandfathers of the Four Cardinal Directions.
