Synopsis This picture book tells a story of a German shepherd dog who loves games with his shadow. He has many mountain friends. Sometimes he needs his friends to help him solve a problem. The story unfolds with Sam losing his shadow, and he is so sad. Myrtle the Hen fools his anguish. She begins to gather their friends to help him find his shadow. When, to no avail, they decide to wait for another day. While Sam is sleeping, he has a dream. In the dream, the secret is revealed. In her book, the author, Barbara Winningham, reveals to children that when something becomes lost it may be found again. As they read and look at the colorful illustrations, it becomes very evident that any problem can be solved. Most importantly, Sam, with the help from his friends and scientific knowledge, is very happy again. Filled with vivid, easy-to-follow, and colorful illustrations, Shadow Chaser presents to all readers a persistent process clearly promoting problem-solving solutions. Viewed as a series, this story continues in that same vein of her first four published books-In the Turtle Pit, My Kitty Dog, Chatter’s Nut House, and the Mud Racing Contest at a Town Called Toad Suck. We see many different pathways of information, guidance, and inspiration revealed to the young reader’s mind.
