Der Vergleich der Erfahrungen der Freigelassenen und ihrer Nachkommen in Morro do Chapéu mit anderen ähnlichen Sklavengesellschaften machte mir klar, dass der Kontext der schrittweisen Abschaffung und der unmittelbaren Zeit nach der Abschaffung in Morro do Chapéu, wie auch an anderen Orten, mit Macht und kontinuierlichen und permanenten Verhandlungen zur Aufrechterhaltung der Herrschaft verbunden gewesen sein könnte. Die Befreiung der Schwarzen im Sertão Baiano wie auch in ganz Brasilien war kein Ereignis, das erst mit der Unterzeichnung des Goldenen Gesetzes am 13. Mai 1888 eintrat, einem Gesetz, dessen Hauptziel die Beendigung der Sklaverei in Brasilien war. Vielmehr handelte es sich um einen langsamen und schrittweisen Prozess, bei dem es sich lediglich um einen Rechtsakt handelte, nicht aber um die Schaffung öffentlicher Maßnahmen zur Integration der Befreiten in die Gesellschaft. Das Hauptziel dieser Forschung war es, das Wissen über die schwarze Bevölkerung im Hinterland von Bahia zu erweitern, aber die Untersuchungen enden hier nicht; ein Teil des Weges wurde zurückgelegt, um die Bedeutung von Freiheit und persönlicher Abhängigkeit besser zu verstehen.
