L’hépatite B est la maladie professionnelle infectieuse la plus importante pour les professionnels de la santé dentaire (PSD). Ces derniers sont fréquemment en contact avec du sang et de la salive et risquent donc d’être exposés au virus de l’hépatite B (VHB). Des études indiquent que les PSD, du fait de leur exposition professionnelle, peuvent avoir un risque dix fois plus élevé de devenir porteurs chroniques du virus de l’hépatite B que le citoyen moyen. Une étude transversale de séroprévalence a été menée auprès d’étudiants en médecine dentaire inscrits à l’institut dentaire. Leurs échantillons de sang ont été prélevés et testés par Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent assay (ELISA) pour l’antigène de surface de l’hépatite B (HBsAg) et les titres d’anticorps anti-HBsAg. Bien qu’un faible taux d’infection par le VHB ait été observé chez les étudiants en médecine dentaire, un nombre significatif d’entre eux n’étaient pas vaccinés, ce qui suggère la nécessité d’une mise en œuvre proactive d’un programme de vaccination contre le VHB.
