W ciągu ostatnich czterdziestu lat program nauczania historii przeszedł znaczące zmiany. Nastąpiła zmiana w dydaktyce w ramach struktury dyscyplin uniwersyteckich i ekspansja historii kultury. Pojęcie edukacji zostało rozszerzone o edukację historyczną, polityczną i kulturalną. Nauczanie ogólne stało się nauczaniem specjalistycznym z centralnym czynnikiem 'treści'. Historia jako przedmiot jest instytucjonalnie przypisana do różnych dyscyplin, takich jak instytuty nauk pedagogicznych / kolegia nauczycielskie, historia i odrębne wydziały / instytuty, takie jak historia kultury i historia kościoła.
