Separation is a novel written by Margaret Lee and published in 1902. The story is set in the late 19th century and follows the lives of two women, Edith and Grace, who become close friends despite their different backgrounds. Edith is a wealthy and privileged young woman, while Grace is from a working-class family and struggles to make ends meet. The two women are drawn together by their shared love of music and soon become inseparable. However, their friendship is put to the test when Edith falls in love with a man from a lower social class and decides to marry him. Grace disapproves of the match and feels that Edith is betraying her privileged upbringing. As Edith and her new husband begin their life together, Grace is left to navigate her own challenges, including a difficult marriage and financial struggles. Despite their differences, the two women remain connected and continue to support each other through their respective trials and tribulations.Through Edith and Grace’s stories, Separation explores themes of class, friendship, love, and the challenges of navigating societal expectations. Lee’s writing offers a poignant and insightful look into the lives of women during this time period and the complexities of their relationships. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
