In 1992, Hudson Staffield was pursuing a successful career in commercial real estate development, more at home in conference rooms with the principals of Silicon Valley start-ups, investors, and San Francisco mortgage bankers than the mission field. But when God called him to an insignificant orphanage in Romania to witness the neglect of the most vulnerable victims of former dictator Ceauscescu’s reign, his life was forever changed. For thirty years, the Holy Spirit called him to leave behind the comfortable existence he had authored for himself in favor of navigating the labyrinthine halls of post-communist bureaucracy to gain control of a crumbling orphanage filled with abused and abandoned HIV-positive children. While he witnessed the Lord’s power to transform the lives of the children, he never expected to find healing from his own past as his Father’s love emerged through him as salt and light. Most of us are fearful of seeking God’s call to go to unknown places because we are all lost children. Through this story, Staffield hopes readers will abandon their cautious lives and allow themselves to be led into the unimaginable intimacy of being a servant of God in their family, their work place, or a place and calling of His choosing.
