Georg Lorenz sucht nach den Ursachen bildungsbezogener Ungleichheiten. Er zeigt, dass Erwartungen von Lehrkräften für die zukünftigen Leistungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern mit Zuwanderungshintergrund teilweise negativ verzerrt sind und dass diese Verzerrungen aus der Anwendung von Stereotypen bei Lehrkräften resultieren. Verzerrte Lehrererwartungen münden in selbsterfüllenden Prophezeiungen. So sind Unterschätzungen der Leistungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern mit geringeren Leselernzuwächsen verbunden. Gleichzeitig gehen Überschätzungen mit höheren Lernzuwächsen im Zeitverlauf einher. Dieser Prozess kann zur Persistenz ethnischer Disparitäten im deutschen Bildungssystem beitragen.
