El Secretum secretorum fue uno de los textos más conocidos y difundidos durante la Edad Media. Compuesto bajo la forma de una carta que Aristóteles envió a Alejandro cuando el rey macedoneo conquistó Persia, pronto se transformó en el libro de cabecera para la educación de los príncipes en las cortes árabes. En el primer cuarto del siglo XII Juan Hispano lo tradujo parcialmente al latín, pero fue en el siglo XIII cuando Felipe de Trípoli, hizo su traducción completa. La variedad de su material (consejos políticos, numerología mágica y hasta un lapidario) hizo que recibiera la censura eclesiástica y con ello que se incrementaran sus versiones. España fue el único país que tradujo las dos versiones árabes originales. Este volumen ofrece por primera vez toda la tradición de esta obra en España; en el cuerpo de la obra se editan las dos versiones castellanas y la latina de Juan Hispano.
