Das Einzigartige an Second Life ist die Tatsache, dass es sich nicht um ein Spiel im herkömmlichen Sinne handelt, denn es gibt keine Kämpfe, keinen Wettbewerb oder Totschlag, man kann nicht gewinnen. Vor allem gibt es kein Märchen, keine Metaerzählung, die dem Geschehen eine Richtung geben könnte. In dieser Welt liegt sämtliche Kreativität auf Seiten der Spieler. Alle Gebäude, Fahrzeuge oder Objekte wurden von den Nutzern erschaffen. Die Firma LindenLab stellt lediglich den Raum zur Verfügung.
