Truth seeking seems to have gone out of fashion. Politicians make claims without bothering to provide facts to back them up and tend to label facts with which they disagree as 'fake news'. Beginning in the 1960’s, there was an upsurge in claims that what mattered most were individual opinions. not some agreed upon, and possibly repressive 'truth'. And yet, to give up an allegiance to truth is to give up the possibility of a shared community. To give up on the importance of truth, especially the search for it, is to close the mind and harden the heart. That is why a commitment to truth and a search for it matters, especially now. This little book grew out of a number of truth related courses the author taught in an older adult program. It uses class-room tested material, including questions, to inspire people to think. The book does not insist on a fixed and final universal truth but on the importance of the search. Readers are encouraged to use the material for discussions both in-person and online. To engage with others in a way that is both honest and open fosters community. And how much that is needed in our partisan, loneliness-prone times.
