Their incomprehensible self annihilation and destruction is marked with passivity and ambiguity. It is an attempt by the dramatist to depict the conflict of the generations, or a class of the society. Because as a modern dramatist Pinter does not allow the audience to make up its mind so easily and keeps the audience in a constant state of tension by bringing its mind into a dialectical opposition to its feelings. They are perpetually betrayed in their search as once they heave a sigh of relief the another problem crops up before them.
