Sea Spray and Smoke Drift

Salt-laden winds sweep across a rugged coastline, mingling with the distant haze of bushfires and the hush of eucalyptus groves. In this evocative collection, the spirit of nineteenth-century Australia is captured in verse-sometimes gentle, sometimes raw, but always resonant with the landscapes and lives of a formative era. Each poem is a window into colonial experience, reflecting both the grandeur and the hardship of a land still shaping its identity. The language is precise and musical, drawing readers into scenes of sunlit shores, shadowed forests, and the quiet dignity of everyday moments under vast southern skies.A landmark in Australian literary history, this collection stands as one of the earliest and most authentic expressions of Australian poetry. The poet’s keen observation and lyrical skill bring to life the textures of the continent: the shifting moods of the bush, the restless energy of the sea, and the subtle interplay between nature and settler. The work’s Victorian era sensibility is evident in its careful attention to form, yet its subject matter is unmistakably Australian-rooted in the unique flora, fauna, and social realities of the time. Through these verses, readers encounter the early voices of a nation, echoing with both longing and belonging. For admirers of English language poetry and collectors of colonial Australian poems, this volume offers a rare convergence of artistry and cultural record. Its pages hold a distinctive blend of personal reflection and national observation, making it a vital addition to any poetry about Australia or broader Australian poet collection. The enduring appeal lies in the clarity of vision and the authenticity of emotion, qualities that continue to engage and move readers well beyond its original context. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
