Viele Menschen behaupten, dass nationale Interessen den meisten außenpolitischen Rahmenbedingungen und Beziehungen zwischen Staaten zugrunde liegen. Dieses Buch versucht, ein ganz anderes Bild zu zeichnen: Es gibt andere Staaten, die sich für die Menschheit engagieren und ihre Außenpolitik so gestalten, dass sie den Bedürfnissen anderer Länder Rechnung trägt. Am Beispiel der schwedischen internationalen Entwicklungspolitik argumentiert der Autor, dass die Beziehungen zwischen Schweden und mehreren Entwicklungsländern in Afrika und anderen Regionen nicht unbedingt von schwedischen Handelsinteressen geleitet sind, sondern vielmehr von einem echten Interesse an der globalen Entwicklung.
