Innere oder maxillofaziale Defekte entstehen durch angeborene Anomalien, Traumata, Tumorexzisionen und Komplikationen bei kosmetischen oder atemwegsverbessernden Verfahren. Chirurgische und/oder prothetische Verfahren mit Prothesen, Schienen oder Stents wurden entwickelt, um sowohl die Form als auch die Funktion zu verbessern. Intraorale Prothesen, Schienen und Stents können insbesondere während der nasalen Rehabilitation (1) die Durchgängigkeit der Atemwege herstellen und aufrechterhalten, (2) die Position des Gewebes beibehalten, (3) die Kontraktur des Gewebes nach der Operation verringern oder (4) bewegliches Gewebe bei der Konstruktion und dem Halt von Gesichtsprothesen unterstützen. Obwohl in diesem Buch Techniken zur Bewältigung gängiger Probleme vorgestellt werden, gibt es immer wieder einzigartige klinische Situationen. Ein großer Teil der Ausführung und des letztendlichen Erfolgs der Kiefergelenksprothetik hängt vom Einfallsreichtum des Zahnarztes ab, der die Leistung erbringt.
