As profissionais de saúde (LHWs) ou agentes comunitárias de saúde são prestadoras de cuidados de saúde bem conhecidas e acessíveis; trabalham em prol da saúde da população após terem recebido menos educação ou formação do que outros profissionais de saúde, sendo também conhecidas como agentes comunitárias de saúde. Elas são a principal fonte de serviços de saúde reprodutiva porta a porta em áreas rurais e favelas urbanas, independentemente do clima frio ou quente, quando as normas das sociedades patriarcais coagem as mulheres a procurar instalações médicas e de saúde. Nos países em desenvolvimento, os centros de planeamento familiar e cuidados de saúde primários trabalham com o apoio da OMS, também conhecido como Programa de Trabalhadoras de Saúde (LHWP), de acordo com as declarações da OMS sobre os agentes comunitários de saúde. A OMS define o papel dos agentes comunitários de saúde como profissionais de saúde acessíveis e responsáveis pela educação em saúde, conscientização sobre doenças e distribuição dos benefícios essenciais de saúde primária entre os membros da comunidade.
