Santiago Valiente es una historia real. Es la autobiografía de Santiago del Ama. Narra la historia de un niño que quedó huérfano a la edad de 12 años en el Madrid de principios del siglo XX. Le tocó vivir una niñez de duro trabajo en la que, a pesar de tener que dejar el colegio para ir a trabajar, no descuida su formación, trabajando de noche para pagarse los estudios. De joven le tocó vivir la República y los años revolucionarios, así como la Guerra Civil. Unos años en los que estuvo a punto de perder la vida en varias ocasiones y en los que contribuyó a salvar otras vidas. Durante la República, siendo civil, recibió la Cruz al Mérito Militar con distintivo blanco. Se tratan de unas escenas de vivo realismo, en las que el protagonista nos muestra sus sentimientos sin disimulos, a la par que constituyen una descripción de la sociedad de su tiempo y un testimonio histórico de unos años convulsos vividos en primera persona . Describe algunos hechos de los que es protagonista que son una primicia histórica. El texto tiene la peculiaridad de estar redactado en verso, un verso directo y fluido de fácil y entretenida lectura, no faltan momentos de humor que se intercalan con otros de profundo dramatismo.
