La Residencial San Felipe es considerada por los limeños como un barrio icónico de clase media. Inaugurada a mediados de la década de 1970, fue concebida como un proyecto de vivienda auspiciado por el Estado para los profesionales de los sectores privado y público, y trabajadores de cuello blanco. Siguiendo un diseño funcionalista, San Felipe es un barrio de densidad alta (con 33 edificios de departamentos) y con una gran cantidad de áreas comunes (parques, jardines, veredas, estacionamientos y plazas). Así, la Residencial es un ideal de orden y civilidad que contrastó desde sus inicios con las áreas informales de inmigrantes que proliferaban en el resto de la ciudad, estas últimas estigmatizadas como no planificadas o desorganizadas. El autor aprovecha este laboratorio natural para investigar el fenómeno de las clases medias, para lo cual y mediante una observación participante realiza más de medio centenar de encuestas a los vecinos residentes que arrojan la data que respalda el análisis. 10
