The author was a Palagi in Samoa. He enjoys being a foreigner as, since his birth he has been a foreigner everywhere he has been. Palagi have the ability to see their own culture in relation to other cultures. True Palagi also look behind and beyond what is apparent to see how the present has developed. The Samoas have plunged into the 21st Century and it is fascinating seeing the Parables that were apparent in Samoa. A parable is a person, place, thing or event that leads to often a religious or spiritual truth. It is refreshing to see two countries, the country of Western Samoa and the territory of American Samoa, who take seriously their philosophy, 'In God we Trust.' It made this palagi feel right at home.

    Ed Buckner / Herb Silverman
On September 11, 2001, Americans witnessed horrific carnage inspired by religious extremism. We saw religious fundamentalists will stop at nothing to reign terror on those they regard as their enemies.  In our response, we began to focus on the oppressive treatment of women and children in other parts of the world where religious fundamentalism rules. But we failed to acknowled...

  • Russia’s early modern orthodox patriarchate
David Goldfrank / Kevin M Kain
Patriarch Nikon, the most energetic, creative, influential, and obstinate of Russia’s early religious leaders, dominates this book. As Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church, Nikon’s most important initiative was to bring Russian religious rituals into line with Greek Orthodox tradition, from which Russia’s practices had diverted. Kiev’s Monastery of the Caves served as a med...

The story takes place in an imaginary city, Malfaxe, located near the east coast of Maryland. Both bizarre and sometimes humo...

  • Sheldon Jackson Parables
    Kenneth W Smith
The author was a staff person at Sheldon Jackson, the Alaskan Christian school that has sent out acclimated scholars since 1878. Most were graduates but others merely salted their education with a year or two at Sheldon Jackson.Other authors may tell of the history and philosophy of the school. I prefer to merely mention incidents, persons or things that constitute the touchsto...

  • John, No Greater Prophet

For many years the author has wondered about John the Baptist, who makes an appearance at the time of his birth and then seems to be missing until the actual baptism of Jesus. Soon after that he is taken prisoner and dies in a Roman Prison. He was related to Jesus, but the Biblical record seems to have nothing else to say about him. He was also a Nazarite, and the only one foun...
