He was raised by his widowed mother who influenced him greatly. Although already living a devout life of study and prayer, Saint John officially became a monk when she passed away. He went into the wilderness where he wrote prolifically on the ascetic life. After many years he withdrew to a cave to live in complete solitude. He lived there for two years until he became ill and had to re-immerse himself in the world.
