Mentre il repubblicanesimo aveva una lunga tradizione nel continente europeo, in Inghilterra la sua piena espressione si ebbe solo durante il regime repubblicano instaurato tra il 1649 e il 1660. Nei primi decenni del XVII secolo, nel confronto sempre più aspro tra Re e Parlamento, l’ideologia repubblicana fu lentamente incorporata nel dibattito politico inglese, in un intricato processo di appropriazione di diverse matrici del pensiero repubblicano e di adattamento dei suoi principi alla tradizione politica e giuridica dell’Inghilterra. In questo processo, alcuni principi furono mantenuti, altri modificati e altri ancora completamente abbandonati. Lo scopo dei saggi qui pubblicati è quello di comprendere il risultato di questo processo e la peculiarità del repubblicanesimo inglese, che ha segnato in modo decisivo il pensiero repubblicano moderno.
