Round Anvil Rock is a historical fiction novel by Nancy Huston. It is set in the late 19th century in the Canadian province of Quebec and follows the story of a young girl named Sarah who is orphaned after her parents die in a fire. Sarah is taken in by her aunt and uncle who are part of a strict religious community known as the ''Brethren''. The novel explores themes of family, religion, and identity as Sarah struggles to find her place within the community and reconcile her own beliefs with those of the Brethren. As she grows older, Sarah begins to question the teachings and practices of the Brethren, leading to conflicts with her family and the community. The story is also intertwined with the history of the region, including the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the tensions between the French-speaking and English-speaking populations. Overall, Round Anvil Rock is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that delves into complex issues of faith, culture, and belonging. The judge and William had gone away from the house as soon as breakfast was over, saying they would try to return in time to see the visitor. Miss Penelope was busy in seeing that the coffee-pot was washed with hot water and rinsed with cold, and scoured inside and out till it shone like burnished silver. The widow Broadnax, too, was as busy as she ever was, sitting in her usual place in the chimney-corner, looking like some large, clumsily graven image in dark stone, and watching her half-sister’s every movement without winking or turning her head. So that Ruth and David were left to follow their own fanciful devices, free to put flowers everywhere. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
