Rotary endodontics has transformed root canal treatment by improving the efficiency, safety, and predictability of canal preparation. Its primary objective is to remove microorganisms and infected tissue while preserving the original canal anatomy for effective irrigation and obturation. The introduction of nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments replaced conventional stainless steel files because of their superior flexibility, shape memory, and superelasticity, allowing better preparation of curved canals with fewer procedural errors. Modern rotary systems incorporate advanced metallurgy, heat treatment, improved cross-sectional designs, and reciprocating or adaptive motions, enhancing cyclic fatigue resistance, cutting efficiency, and corrosion resistance. Despite the risk of torsional and cyclic fatigue fractures, proper clinical techniques and adherence to recommended protocols significantly improve treatment outcomes. Rotary endodontics continues to evolve, providing safer, minimally invasive, and more predictable root canal therapy.
