Il loro approccio si basa su una nuova identità, a metà strada tra l’africano e il francese.Nelle loro opere, questi scrittori ritraggono personaggi alle prese con i drammatici problemi dell’immigrazione, contro i quali sono determinati a lottare. Per questo motivo le loro opere portano i segni del multiculturalismo e dell’integrazione. Si definiscono 'letteratura-mondo' per dimostrare il loro desiderio di trascendere le barriere culturali, etniche e geografiche imposte dalla storia.
