Ponadto w badaniu zastosowano metodologię jakościową. Po uzyskaniu zgody przeprowadzono pogłębione, częściowo ustrukturyzowane wywiady z mężczyznami. Wyniki tego eksploracyjnego badania tożsamości narodowej wskazują, że odgrywa ona skuteczną i główną rolę w budowaniu państwa. W tym celu iraccy Kurdowie mają swoją własną tożsamość narodową, taką jak język, ziemia i kultura. Jednak te trzy elementy nadal budzą kontrowersje. Na przykład Kurdowie w Iraku nie mają standardowego języka ani niezależnej ziemi, a ich kultura znana jest z plemienności. Ponadto Kurdowie nie mają problemów z religią jako elementem tożsamości narodowej, ale nie mogli wykorzystać religii do ochrony interesów narodowych i budowy państwa kurdyjskiego; mają też długą historię na Bliskim Wschodzie. Wreszcie, obecnie iraccy Kurdowie pragną oddzielić się od rządu centralnego.
