Rainbow Family to społeczność, która powstała w 1972 roku w Stanach Zjednoczonych, a następnie rozprzestrzeniła się na cały świat i od tego czasu podczas swoich spotkań realizuje utopijną wizję braku hierarchii i egalitaryzmu. Książka ta stanowi wprowadzenie do historycznego rozwoju społeczności, jej organizacji, podstaw ideologicznych i wartości. Następnie przedstawiono różne teorie dotyczące społeczeństw egalitarnych, ról płciowych i stereotypów płciowych w zachodnich społeczeństwach patriarchalnych, a także przemiany, które obecnie je kształtują. Na podstawie tych teorii przeanalizowano materiał zebrany podczas czterech spotkań Rainbow Gatherings pod kątem ról płciowych na spotkaniach społeczności. Na koniec skupiono się na tym, w jaki sposób wyuczone struktury społeczne odzwierciedlają się w Rainbow Family i czy społeczności tej udaje się przełamać porządek płciowy panujący w zachodnim społeczeństwie patriarchalnym, aby móc realizować swoją ideologię egalitarną i pozbawioną hierarchii w swoim wspólnym życiu.
