QUESTO LIBRO tratta principalmente della sopravvivenza della monarchia saudita. Applicando alcuni aspetti del modello dello Stato-rentier, la metafora del padre e della famiglia e la prospettiva della superiorità funzionale e basandosi prevalentemente sull’esperienza del Regno dell’Arabia Saudita, questo studio ha cercato di svelare i fattori che hanno permesso ai regimi monarchici del Medio Oriente di sopravvivere agli sconvolgimenti in corso nella regione. Mentre gli sconvolgimenti dell’intera regione hanno spazzato via i regimi repubblicani di Tunisia, Egitto e Libia, le monarchie di Arabia Saudita, Giordania, Marocco e Qatar, tra gli altri, sono rimaste in gran parte intatte, sollevando la questione del perché e del come siano riuscite ad arginare le maree del collasso. In risposta a questa domanda, si è sostenuto che la capacità dei regimi di lunga data di mobilitare risorse - materiali e non - per affrontare strategicamente e tatticamente il malcontento interno fornisce un quadro per analizzare la sopravvivenza del regime. Va tuttavia notato che la sopravvivenza del regime non implica necessariamente la stabilità dello Stato o del regime, se per stabilità si intende l’assenza di attriti sociopolitici e di scismi politici.
