An adventure story of unconventional frontier love during the American Civil War Born into a society tolerant of homosexuals, River Otter is confused by the white culture's persecution of such men. A sequel to his debut novel, Cut Hand, Mark Wildyr's River Otter tells the story of a survivor of the wholesale massacre of his people and a major in the army that killed them. As the war begins to wind down, Otter leaves the only home he has ever known to help Major James Morrow, Commandant of Ft. Yanube, build a farm north of the fort. He begins a new life with the handsome Major while coming to grips with growing hostility toward natives and rising danger from a local militia bent on eliminating all bloods from the territory. As his physical attraction for the blond soldier slowly grows into a love perilous to both of them, Otter is distracted by personal challenges. As he struggles to survive the social and political upheaval sweeping the plains, Otter tries to remain true to his own set of values. Set in the plains of post-Civil War America, River Otter is a story passionate love, honor and respect.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
