Ci sono circa trentacinque milioni di persone che vivono con l’HIV nel mondo, e circa sei milioni di loro vivono in Sudafrica. Quasi un quinto della popolazione sudafricana muore per malattie legate all’AIDS e il numero di nuove infezioni continua a crescere. La caduta del regime di apartheid nel 1994 ha lasciato il Paese in rovina e l’epidemia è stata libera di diffondersi ad un ritmo veloce. La leadership politica considerava altre questioni più urgenti, il che ha portato a risposte sociali e culturali deboli nella sensibilizzazione all’HIV e all’AIDS. Questo libro analizza da vicino le risposte letterarie all’epidemia attraverso il prisma delle opere di narrativa post-apartheid. L’obiettivo principale di questo studio è trovare risposte al perché l’AIDS sia considerato un argomento così tabù. Indaga su come i diversi personaggi, le loro famiglie, gli amici e i lettori reagiscono a una diagnosi di sieropositività. Questo lavoro descrive anche il decadimento fisico e psicologico che si subisce a causa dell’epidemia e come si potrebbe prevenire. Inoltre, mostra come, in un contesto socio-culturale più ampio, le donne possano essere potenziate da un’epidemia in continua crescita. Il libro include un’intervista inedita alla scrittrice Sindiwe Magona.
