W niniejszej pracy zamierzamy sprawdzić, poprzez przedstawione przykłady, koncepcje natury w historii tego miasta w dwóch momentach historycznych: w latach 1820 i 1903, powiązane z światopoglądem i uwarunkowaniami społeczno-kulturowymi podmiotów zaangażowanych w ocenę i przypisywanie wartości środowisku naturalnemu. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone w oparciu o źródła pierwotne, a jego autor zamierzał podkreślić rolę przypisywaną ludziom w ich relacji z naturą miasta, przyjmując za punkt odniesienia teoretyczny historię środowiska. Pierwsze studium przypadku dotyczy relacji z podróży Auguste’a de Saint-Hilaire’a zawartych w jego dziele Viagem ao Rio Grande do Sul (1820-1821), na które wpływ miały europejskie standardy piękna, harmonii i ludzkiej pomysłowości w dominacji nad naturą i tworzeniu życia społecznego. Druga analiza dotyczy niektórych prac związanych z poprawą stanu miejsc publicznych, przeprowadzonych przez inspirowany pozytywizmem samorząd miejski, oraz jego koncepcji dotyczących natury w kontekście miejskim, nasyconych ideałem porządku, higieny, bezpieczeństwa i postępu.
