Rigid internal fixation is a surgical procedure that precisely reduces and immobilizes bone fractures with metal implants to allow healing. Intermaxillary fixation, with or without open reduction, is the mainstay of traditional fixing techniques for stabilizing mandibular fractures. Rigid internal fixation using miniplates and screws has gained general acceptability in the last ten years for the treatment of acute traumatic mandibular injuries. In light of the ongoing focus on cost containment in the delivery of healthcare, oral and maxillofacial surgeons support their therapeutic approaches by arguing that they are both advantageous and economical.
