Riesenzellen sind ein- oder mehrkernige Zellen, die im Vergleich zu anderen Zellen im Gewebe sehr groß sind und zwischen einem und 100 Zellkerne aufweisen. Bei lang anhaltenden Infektionen oder chronischen Entzündungen werden die Lymphozyten in Makrophagen umgewandelt, die miteinander verschmelzen und mehrkernige Riesenzellen bilden. Eine Reihe von zystischen, metabolischen, osteodystrophischen, mikrobiellen, tumorösen und tumorähnlichen Läsionen der Mundhöhle weisen charakteristische Riesenzellen auf, was ihre Diagnose vereinfacht. In diesem Buch werden die Merkmale der verschiedenen Riesenzell-Läsionen der Mundhöhle beschrieben.
