Joel Polack was an early Jewish settler in pre-colonial New Zealand. He wrote two of the most informative books about the country published in the 1840s which shed fresh light on early European encounters with Māori and colonial life. Polack’s pioneering observations, from his early mention of the extinct moa to his detailed accounts of whales, marine life, flora, fauna, geology, and Māori customs and traditions, provided invaluable information for subsequent settlers and continue to be widely quoted by historians today.This book explores his life and the era in which he lived, tracing his origins in Britain, to his time in New Zealand and his death in California.
