Richard, Coeur de Lion is an 18th-century French opéra comique in three acts, with music by André Ernest Modeste Grétry and libretto by Michel-Jean Sedaine. The opera is based on the story of Richard the Lionheart’s imprisonment in Austria after the Third Crusade. It tells the story of his rescue by his faithful servant Blondel. First performed in 1784, the opera quickly gained popularity and became one of Grétry’s most successful works. It is noted for its tuneful melodies, charming characters, and exciting plot, blending comedy and drama effectively.
