Brunis historisch-methodologische Analyse von Reziprozität wendet sich gegen die herrschende Meinung in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften, die sich - dem Menschenbild des ‚homo oeconomicus’ folgend - einzig mit den beiden einfachsten Formen von Reziprozität, nämlich vertraglicher Zusammenarbeit sowie eigennützigen Handlungen, befassen und alle anderen Formen ausblenden. Der Verfasser analysiert soziale Interaktionen in den drei unterschiedlichen Weisen von Reziprozität, die allesamt schließlich einer vierten Strategie gegenübergestellt werden: nämlich der grundsätzlichen Verweigerung von Reziprozität. Brunis Buch ist längst zu einem anerkannten Grundlagenwerk geworden und von Interesse für alle, die sich mit dem Zusammenspiel von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, dem Charakter von Reziprozität, der Struktur sozialer Interaktionen und der Methodologie evolutionärer Spieltheorie befassen.
