Die rezidivierende aphthöse Ulzeration (RAU) ist eine gutartige ulzerierte Läsion, die häufig an der nicht verhornten Mundschleimhaut auftritt. Die Ätiopathogenese ist noch nicht genau geklärt, es ist jedoch bekannt, dass einige Faktoren mit der Ursache in Zusammenhang stehen, wie lokale, systemische, immunologische, genetische, allergische, ernährungsbedingte und mikrobielle Faktoren. Es werden verschiedene Behandlungen empfohlen, um die Heilung zu fördern, die Symptome zu kontrollieren und die Häufigkeit von Rückfällen zu verringern, da es keine endgültige Heilung für diese Ulzerationen gibt. In diesem Beitrag werden die ursächlichen Faktoren der RAU, die klinischen Merkmale, die Diagnosekriterien sowie die therapeutischen Herausforderungen vorgestellt, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf dem klinischen Management und den Fortschritten in der Lasertherapie liegt.
