Young children will instantly recognize the situation in the story and understand that Rexy the T-Rex is being selfish and cranky because he feels scared, worried, overwhelmed and perhaps a tad ashamed. They will undoubtedly appreciate the honesty, humor and warmth of the text as well as the funny and adorable cartoon illustrations. It’s a reassuring tale with characters who are good and supportive friends, who have a good teacher to help them reach resolution. As for me, I laughed out loud in recognition of my own foibles and those I experienced as a child, as well as at some of the “in-jokes,” such as the humorous titles of the books the characters are reading. Kids will enjoy being in on the jokes as well, as they learn the “four steps”: easily duplicatable, non-preachy suggestions of how to be a better communicator and friend. This unique and engaging book would be a worthy addition to any preK-1 classroom bookshelf, library, child therapist’s office, and of course, at home.Carol L.
