Laura Di Angelo is a successful concert pianist living a perfectly happy and peaceful life until her husband goes missing on a business trip to Mexico. She and her three children fall victim to Marty Longston, her husband’s corrupt business partner. Trusting Marty to notify the police of Anthony’s disappearance, Laura is stunned to find out the police have never been notified and that Marty instead is blaming Anthony for his his own fraudulent insurance practices. He has been in love with Laura since he and Anthony were college buddies and is bent on claiming Laura for himself. When he fails to convince Laura that Anthony has left his family on purpose, he freezes any income to Laura from the business and sends the family into financial distress. Armed with a trust in God and believing in Anthony’s love for his family, Laura and the children begin an exhaustive search and never give up hope that he will return. Laura finally gives in to her mother’s offers to help, which allows her to accept a teaching position at Julliard and keep their family home in anticipation of Anthony’s return. The involvement of  a seasoned FBI in Anthony’s disappearance and Marty’s crimes relieves the family of the dead-end efforts of the family to find their husband and father on their own.Bloodied and bruised, Anthony Di Angelo regains consciousness in the Cabo San Lucas desert with no memory of his identity or his past. He is nursed back to health by a kind Mexican family but struggles between love for his new home and fleeting glimpses into his past. Introduced to a religion that seems both comforting and oddly familiar, he accepts his new life and new friends who he learns to love as family.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
