Le reti di sensori wireless (WSN) rimangono un tema di ricerca molto attuale, grazie alla loro vasta gamma di aree di applicazione, come il monitoraggio ambientale, la sorveglianza militare, la sanità e la gestione dei disastri. Le WSN comprendono nodi sensore di piccole dimensioni con batteria e potenza di elaborazione e unità di memoria limitate, per cui il miglioramento del consumo energetico è una delle principali sfide progettuali per qualsiasi rete di sensori. In altre parole, una rete di sensori wireless è un gruppo di nodi combinati con piccoli sensori dotati di ricetrasmettitori utilizzati per il rilevamento, il monitoraggio e la raccolta di dati in vari ambienti. Le WSN sono diventate uno dei componenti essenziali dell’Internet delle cose (IoT). In un sistema basato sull’IoT monitorano diversi oggetti fisici e inoltrano i dati raccolti alla stazione base o al nodo gateway per un’ulteriore elaborazione.
