This book presents a comparative historical overview of the transformation of the position of women in interconnected spheres of social life across the Mediterranean region. Many Mediterranean countries share a common historical background characterized by late industrialization as well as the importance of the family as a social institution and the affirmation of traditional gender roles as a defining feature of cultural relations. These historical similarities are nevertheless accompanied by important differences concerning the timing and level of industrial development and the political changes that have reshaped labourmarket institutions and cultural attitudes. Through a comparative historical analysis of the different trajectories of female employment in these countries, the book explores the ways in which the interface between economic, political and cultural factors produces particular gender outcomes.

    HENRY DAVID THOREAU
