Os revestimentos para cavidades têm sido tradicionalmente utilizados em restaurações diretas e indiretas com o objetivo de promover a reparação da dentina e neutralizar os ácidos. Atualmente, os revestimentos são utilizados quando os compósitos de resina são usados como materiais restauradores nos dentes posteriores, mas por um motivo diferente. Clinicamente, considera-se que os revestimentos diminuem a sensibilidade e umedecem a cavidade melhor do que os compósitos restauradores devido à sua fluidez, adaptação à superfície dentinária e adesão. À medida que os sistemas de colagem e os materiais compósitos continuam a melhorar e a ser melhor compreendidos, o mesmo ocorre com as técnicas de colocação de compósitos.
