La reconnaissance des entités nommées (NER) et la désambiguïsation du sens des mots (WSD) sont deux des principales tâches du NLP. La reconnaissance des entités nommées est le processus de classification et d’extraction des mots considérés comme significatifs dans un texte. Ce(s) mot(s) significatif(s) peut (peuvent) varier en fonction du domaine. Par exemple, ces entités peuvent être des pourcentages, des dates ainsi que des noms de personnes, des noms de lieux et des noms de sociétés, etc. Le WSD est un problème ouvert dans le domaine du NLP. Il consiste à identifier le sens d’un mot, lorsqu’il a plusieurs sens, dans une phrase. Le WSD tente d’identifier les expressions littérales d’un mot, et non les expressions figuratives. Le traitement du langage figuratif est une étude similaire et un sous-domaine de la WSD. Le traitement du langage figuratif se concentre sur la détermination des expressions figuratives, à l’exception des expressions littérales.
