A instituição da chefia no Gana é o mais antigo sistema sociopolítico de governação e foi largamente responsável pela administração dos grupos étnicos do Gana, antes do advento do sistema de governação ocidental. A instituição da chefia é o vértice do sistema tradicional de governação e coloca o Ohene (chefe) ou a Ohemaa (rainha/mãe) como chefe de uma comunidade política. A instituição da chefia no Gana tem sido confrontada com muitos desafios que remontam à era colonial. Nos últimos tempos, tem sido abalada por numerosas disputas e conflitos a uma escala sem precedentes. Apesar disso, uma das zonas tradicionais do Gana, Asanteman, parece ter desenvolvido mecanismos consuetudinários eficazes para a resolução de litígios que ajudaram a resolver muitos litígios intratáveis na zona. O mecanismo bem sucedido de resolução de disputas do Conselho Tradicional de Asanteman é o foco deste estudo.
