L’eugénisme est un mouvement scientifique et social largement présent dans les débats intellectuels de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle. Issu des théories de l’anthropologue anglais Francis Galton, son objectif principal était d’améliorer l’espèce humaine. Cependant, au fur et à mesure de son appropriation par des intellectuels de différentes régions du monde, l’eugénisme a été re-signifié et représenté de différentes manières, en fonction de la culture avec laquelle il est entré en contact. Au Brésil, l’eugénisme a pris de l’importance au cours des premières décennies du 20e siècle, car les hypothèses eugénistes ont contribué à expliquer le retard du pays par rapport aux nations plus développées. La ville de Ponta Grossa, dans l’État du Paraná, qui traversait à l’époque une période de turbulences politiques et culturelles, a adopté la théorie eugéniste, produisant des discours qui, bien qu’alignés sur la perspective majoritaire de l’époque, présentaient également certaines particularités.
